Involvement in BONy project:
P.M.F. S.r.l. is responsible of the whole project coordination (WP1 – management). As well it is leading the WP4 concerning the realization of the whole technological infrastructure and cognitive algorithms development.

Giuseppe Ursino: Master in Business Admin. Financial Audit expert. He is vice-president of Assoconsult, the Italian association of Consultancy corporates. He was elected at a young age President of the “Business & Finance” Commission of the Accountants’ Professional Association of Catania. He was President of Assoconsult Sicilia and President of the Training Organization of Confindustria, called SFC Catania; He was the Vice-President of the Hi-Tech Section of Confindustria Catania. Component of the Executive Council of the Chamber of Commerce of Catania. As ICT expert, scientific coordinator of a technology innovation project on multimedia convergence, in cooperation with the University of Catania and funded by ERDF-Sicily. He speaks Italian and English.

Manuele Manente: MA in European Policy, Right and Institutions at the European Institute of Geneva. He is skilled in project cycle management and logical framework, planning, monitoring and reporting; experienced at the OECD-Development Centre, delegate for the Italian permanent representative at the WIPO and WTO, Geneva. During these previous experiences he developed excellent interpersonal communicational skills, being comfortable in international and multicultural working contexts. Excellent coordination and organizational competences, with great abilities of team management.
He is currently the Manager of the European Project Office of JO Group working at European projects in various programmes such as LLP and 7FP. Moreover, he is project manager of BONy project (Babylon & ONtology: Multilingual and cognitive e-Learning Management System via PDA phone – exploring Semantic WEB and Social Network application in ICT-based educational scenario. He speaks five languages: Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.


STLab, ISTC CNR, Rome, Italy. Project scientific coordinator

The Semantic Technology Laboratory (STLab), within the Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Technology (ISTC, of the Italian National Research Council (CNR,, has been founded in the Autumn of 2008. The Lab aims at performing research and development in semantic technologies. STLab competences include methods, best practices, tools and reusable models for ontology design, statistical natural language processing, and knowledge extraction that hybridizes ontology and natural language engineering. Typical application domains include organizational, business, industrial, legal, biomedical, e-government, and agricultural information systems. The STLab is currently a partner in the EU projects NeOn (, IKS (, and BONy (, and coordinates the CNR research programme Semantic IntraWeb, Semantic Scouting, and Historical Knowledge Representation.

Alfio Massimiliano Gliozzo is a Researcher and Project Manager with over 9 years of international experience in the Semantic Technology industry and Academic Research. He is author of 40+ publications in the areas of Computational Linguistics, Information Retrieval and Semantic WEB. He co-founded the Semantic Technology Laboratory of the Italian National Research Council (Rome, Italy) where he coordinates the NLP area and the UE project BONy. Previously, he has been working on Semantic Advertising as a Senior Researcher at Reinvent, Inc. (Vancouver, BC, Canada) and he was research fellow at FBK-irst (Trento, Italy). He received his PhD in Information and Communication Technology from the University of Trento in 2005.

Aldo Gangemi is senior researcher at the CNR Institute for Cognitive Sciences and Technology in Rome, and head of the newly formed Semantic Technology Lab (STLab, His research focuses on collaborative ontology design, lexical semantics, and semantic interoperability. He has a large international publication, conference organization, and teaching track, and has been involved in several projects funded by the European Union, governmental organizations, and industrial companies (either as research partner or consultant). He has coordinated the CNIPA Working Group for the Standardization of Metadata and Semantics in the e-Services of Italian Public Administration, and the W3C Task Force on Porting WordNet to the Semantic Web. He is a member of the ECDC (epidemiology), and SEMIC.EU (eGovernment) advisory boards.

4system has actively co-shaped this market, basic rules, schemes, as well as training notation standards and, what is the most important, design of the methodology of trainings applying multimedia techniques.
We are one of few providers of media tools for educational purposes to have designed a few dozen innovative ideas for content development, as far as motivating students. We do realise in fact the obstacles, occurring while trying to change a teacher-oriented lesson to a student-oriented one. Emphasis on motivating an employee to learn has been many times one of the fundamental traits of a training scheme. 4system’s experience includes over one hundred courses, training schemes, studies and eLearning exams. We are deeply aware of essential traits of training run for service staff of production companies and what should be emphasized while designing courses for sale representatives.

Involvement in BONy project:
4system Polska Sp. z o.o will lead WP 2: as private SME specialising in e-learning, 4system is involved in elaborating the content of European Project Cycle Management and realization of the e-learning courses in eleven languages. 4system will also take part in dissemination and exploitation plan.

Aneta Zydziak graduated in Computer Engineering; E-learning specialist: content and pedagogic developer, computer skilled. Coordination of variety type of e-learning projects. Cooperation with many institutions on educational fields. Currently works in European project department and helps in projects managing.

Dariusz Dolega graduated from Computer Engineering at Technische Universität of Berlin, specialist in e-learning solutions, and highly skilled in software programming. He is the CEO of 4system Polska company delivering solutions within e-learning. Author of many programming solutions (LCMS platform, software applications and e-learning methods).

IDEC S.A., Piraeus, Greece.

IDEC is a training and consultancy company based in Piraeus, which is the port of Athens. Clients of IDEC are both SMEs and the larger Greek companies including the sector of the textile, clothing and food sectors, Entrepreneurs’ Associations, Universities and Chambers of Commerce/Industry. Its staff is mainly made up of mechanical, electrical and software engineers with postgraduate studies and long-term industrial experiences. Semantic Technologies at IBM.

The use of rich conceptual models in disciplines such as Information Extraction, Business Analytics, Information and Services Integration, Natural Language Processing, is customary at IBM. Generally speaking, these models aim at capturing business realities through sorts of (often implicit) linguistic and ontological analysis. The need of improving both formal frameworks and methodologies for such analyses, along with the need of robust technologies to better exploit conceptual models, is generally deemed as a priority. The talk will provide a survey of how knowledge representation frameworks and automatic reasoning systems are currently used in IBM technologies and solutions, and will provide an outlook of ongoing research.

Guido Vetere has attained a degree in Philosophy of Language at the University of Rome 'La Sapienza' with a thesis in computational linguistics.
He joined IBM Scientific Center in 1989, and worked in various research and development projects on expert systems, knowledge management and language technologies. Since 2005, he manages the IBM Center for Advanced Studies of Rome. He is member of Program Committees of various international conferences on Web Services, Ontologies, Semantic Web. Also, he represents IBM in scientific boards of several European research programs. He is the author of numerous scientific publications and regularly collaborates with Sole 24 Ore on scientific divulgation. He is co-founder and VP of 'Senso Comune', a no-profit organization for building a collaborative knowledge base of the Italian language. Founder Sanjiva Nath, an expert in Enterprise Information Management, distributed engineering projects, and semantic web technologies, discovered that the solution is achieved through a combination of these disciplines. He developed his theories through innovative research in semantic web technologies and ontologies.

Sanjiva Nath has more than 25 years of experience in software technology and advises Silicon Valley start-ups in offshore software development strategies, process and methodologies, and overall software engineering operations. He has a long track record of building and managing high-performance and scalable software engineering teams across multiple geographies. He co-authored two patents and has authored several books in software engineering. Prior to founding zAgile, he served as VP of Engineering at several companies including Trigo Technologies (acquired by IBM), ePit Systems (technology acquired by Hitachi), Abilizer Solutions (technology acquired by BEA), and planet U (acquired by Transora). Sanjiva holds a B.S. degree in Molecular Biology from San Francisco State University.

Shifting the paradigm in eLearning from one based on learning objects to one based on semantic web services infrastructure.

In this talk, I will report on some of the results of the LUISA (Learning Content Management System Using Innovative Semantic Web Services Architecture, project. Current technologies aimed at supporting learning goals primarily follow a data and metadata-centric paradigm, which provides the learner with appropriate learning content packages containing the learning process description as well as the learning resources - i.e. the learning objects. Usually, the allocation of learning resources is done manually at the design-time of a content package. Therefore, a content package cannot take into consideration - and thus properly support - the specific learning context of a single user. Indeed, the actual context can be known at runtime only. These facts limit the reusability of a content package across different contexts and standards. To overcome these issues, we proposed an innovative approach towards a more rich and flexible service-oriented infrastructure, following the idea of a dynamic allocation at runtime of resources for a given learning process in a specific learning context. The enhanced architecture will open new possibilities in the automation of learning object discovery, selection, composition and negotiation, within a distributed service architectures seamlessly integrated through ontologies.

Alessio Gugliotta received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Udine in March 2006. From January 2006 to December 2008 he had a position of Research Fellow at the Knowledge Media Institute, The Open University (UK), where he carried out an intense research activity in the area of Knowledge Modelling and Representation, Service Oriented Architectures, Semantic Web Services and their application within multiple domains, such as e-Government and e-Learning. He has published over 30 refereed articles in the aforementioned topics and he has been in charge of several university courses (Computer Programming, e-Government, Semantic Web) at the University of Udine, as well as tutorial and training sessions at international research conferences. Currently, he has a position at the ICT department of Innova S.p.A. (Italy), a technology transfer and valorisation company, where he is involved in distinct EU projects.

Giovanni Sorrentino, as an ICT expert, has gained more than 15 years experience in ICT system analysis and design, with special focus on knowledge management and learning management systems, as well as e-content design and development. He is involved in research and development, as well as in project management activities of multimodal (mobile, web, digital terrestrial) distance learning systems and services.
