1Dr. Ria Morphitou, fe:male Mentoring Circles Facilitator at Intercollege, appeared on the radio show of Υiannis Tsouloftas “PEOPLE of DEVELOPMENT " on Wednesday, 7th of December, 2011. The radio show, invites key people of the public sphere to discuss important issues relating to the economic development of Cyprus and Europe in general.

Dr. Morphitou discussed how the current financial crisis has placed a disproportionate economic burden on women, with nearly twice as many women as men experiencing the devastating results of job loss or inability to access the labor market.

Dr. Morphitou explained that this phenomenon is in line with widely publicized research and reports that show that women are still far more vulnerable than men in regards to job security and social protection, and have greater difficulty in gaining access and control over financial and economic resources. She underlined the importance of highly targeted policy and programmes that specifically address the issue of discrimination faced by women in accessing equal employment opportunities, especially women that belonged in such vulnerable groups such as “women over fifty, women of ethic minorities, single parents, college graduates with no previous work experience e.t.c.”

The fe:male project was introduced, as one key project initiaves for supporting and promoting women entrepreneurship, an important measure for driving employment and economic development especially in such difficult times. Dr. Morphitou, discussed the benefits of participating in the innovating Mentoring Circles and she provided details about the new round of Mentoring Circles starting in Limasssol in February 2012. As a result a number of women contacted Intercollege and registered in the next round of Mentoring Circles!
