Under the measure 126.96.36.199 bis “Fundings for research, development and innovation” (PO FESR Sicilia 2007/2013) P.M.F. Research coordinates a project in collaboration with the Department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering ‐ University of Catania and the INGV ‐ National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology: VOLCAN GUARD.
The major environmental issues that concern Sicily are the risk of geological instability of the area and the volcanic and seismic risk. The project titled “Volcan Guard ‐ Monitoring of inertial elements and gas in volcanic sites”, aims to develop a network of low cost sensors to take over the variation of some inertial elements and gas concentration.
The purpose of this monitoring network is not only to provide accurate estimates of observed variables (light, temperature, vibration), but also a qualitative indication of how these parameters are changing. The innovative nature of the project lies in the capacity of this tool to develop prompt information on the phenomenon measured and to provide extremely useful information about the event necessary to generate states of alert.
